Helping Others: Joplin, Missouri Red Cross Fundraiser

When I heard the news about Joplin I felt terrible for the town that I had stopped in many times to grab fuel and snacks on various Midwestern road trips. Just like my friend, Adrian, wrote on Facebook, "I used to stop in Joplin, Missouri for food and gas taking road trips out of Chicago. Really nice people there. It's just one of the last classic Route 66 towns. The kind of place built by the highway that really embraces road travelers and car culture. It's hard to imagine 75% of that town as wiped out last night." Who didn't feel awful when the images started popping up on the news and internet? And small? Mother Nature has a way of making me feel very, very small.

<PREVIEWEND> I didn't think that I might actually know someone affected by this disaster even though I'm originally from the Midwest. Most of my family is in Iowa, Illinois and Kansas. There are outliers up in Minnesota and I'm sure some folks ended up in Nebraska and we've spent many a great vacation in St. Louis. But Joplin? Surely it's just a road trip memory. Not so. My sister-in-law's family lives in Joplin. And in a number of the images I've seen on the news there are the remains of her mother's house. Just a stone wall with a few windows. Not a tree in sight. She's lucky to be alive. The dog and cat are safe, too. As are most of her neighbors. There are many who are not. And they could use our help.

We're having a little raffle to raise money for the Red Cross Relief Efforts in Joplin, Missouri as well as the many other communities that have been affected by severe weather this year (Western Massachusetts we heart you!). Our goal is to raise $2,500 but we did that so let's raise $3,000! And we've already started receiving amazing prizes from talented and caring people like the Boston Bead Company, Rhinofluff, Fleur de Fiber, Daisy Janie, Made in Lowell, The Merriweather Council, The Orange Owl, Red Staggerwing Designs, Soto Softies, Michelle Engel Bencsko of Cloud9 Fabrics, Mike Burke, and Tanuki Dyeworks. We've put out a call to many of our vendors as well as the crafty genius community to see if we can drum up even more awesomeness to share with you. And of course we'll be donating product (fat quarter bundles, yarn, patterns) and our best handmade goods. We'll be posting the prizes on Tuesday, May 31st after we've had a chance to collect photos and descriptions from our generous donors. (Don't worry, there will be many prizes and many opportunities to win something fabulous!)

UPDATE: More crafty genius prizes!  From Knit Collage, Shortcake Scraps, The Spun Monkey, Lush Beads, Post Road, Not Without Merit, Dirty Water Dyeworks, Stray Notions, Needle and Spatula, Sparkle J Designs & Codi of Home Ec. Workshop!

How's this going to work?

For every $10 you donate to the Red Cross, you get a virtual raffle ticket. Donate $10 you get 1 ticket; donate $50 you get 5 chances to win a prize, $100 gets you 10 chances.

We're (Virginia & Noah) donating $100 to get this party started.

So go to the Red Cross Donate Funds page and make a donation. When you confirm your donation you'll receive a tracking code which is really important. It is located at the end of the confirmation page.

Then leave a comment on this post. Only one is necessary even if you are super generous and donate hundreds of dollars. You need to include the tracking code in your comment.

  • Leave a comment - include your donation amount
  • Include your tracking code
  • Your email address so we can contact you should you win!

How we'll be tracking this raffle:
When you submit a comment we'll assign you a raffle ticket number. We'll create a tracking post on this here blog so everyone knows their raffle number and so we can all track the fundraising amounts. We'll update the page every evening until fundraising concludes on Tuesday, June 14th at midnight.

Then like any good online raffle we'll have the random generator select the winners on Wednesday, June 15th! Yay - winning! Announcements will be made on the blog and we'll contact you via email, too. IMPORTANT: Keep the confirmation email you receive from the Red Cross - you'll have to send that to us when we contact you. You can send it right away and forward it to: makesomething@gatherhereonline.com.

Also, please, please, please help us spread the word about this raffle. Post it on your blog, Facebook and Twitter pages. The more people know, the more funds we will raise to assist with the Red Cross Tornado Relief efforts.

And thank you! Thank you for your generosity! Thank you donors for your awesome prizes! And thank you for spreading the word!
